Cutting down on the amount of water your household uses can add up to considerable savings over time. It also helps conserve water from our natural resources, making your home more eco-friendly. You can do your part in reducing your water usage in the following ways.
Leaks in your home can become significant sources of water loss when they go undetected. Minor leaks can turn into major ones over time, which causes a lot of water to be wasted. Keep in mind that these leaks can also cause water damage to your home. When checking for leaks, remember to watch for drips coming out of your faucets and shower heads. These might seem like minor leaks, but they waste large amounts of water. You can look for toilet leaks by placing some food coloring in the tank. If you have a leak, you’ll see colored water in the bowl. You should also check your water heater for leaks and have them fixed as soon as possible.
Running your washing machine or dishwasher uses up a lot of water. When you run these machines when they’re only partially full, you’ll end up having to do more loads over time. This adds up to a considerable boost in the amount of water you use. Instead of running these machines when they’re only partially full, wait until they’re completely full. You won’t have to run them as often when you switch to only doing full loads of laundry or dishes.
Running faucets can be a big source of wasted water. Whether you’re brushing your teeth, washing your hands or cleaning up dishes, avoid leaving the faucet on the whole time. Shutting it off while brushing, drying off your hands or scrubbing dishes can help you conserve water. Instead of running the water while washing dishes, for example, soak them in a sink partially filled with water.
