Are you tired of writing a big check every month to the utility company to pay your electric bill? This summer has been a sweltering one in the Hampton Roads area, and homeowners have paid the price trying to keep cool. One way to permanently cut your energy costs is to switch to a high-efficiency HVAC system, and the incentives to do so have never been better.
The federal government has been leading the push to persuade Americans to conserve energy. Along the way, utility companies have gotten involved and so have the manufacturers of cooling and heating systems. There are currently rebates and tax credits available that can significantly reduce the cost of high-efficiency equipment and make upgrading your system extremely affordable.
The biggest savings available to homeowners are the available rebates. Until Aug. 26, Lennox, for example, will pay you back $1,100 when you have one of their high-efficiency HVAC bundled systems installed in your home. Even more money in rebates will be paid out if you also include installation of four solar modules to help power the new unit.
The Lennox offer is in addition to the money that you will qualify in the form of a tax credit from the federal government. Uncle Sam will give you a $300 tax credit for the purchase of a high efficiency air conditioner that replaces an older inefficient model. The federal government will also increase the amount of the tax credit if you add solar panels to generate your own power at home. These credits are available till the end of the year.
While the rebates and tax credits are a good reason to upgrade your system, the best reason is the permanent energy savings that you will enjoy. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that when a homeowner switches to a new high-efficiency model that replaces a unit over a decade old, electric use will be cut in half.
