If you’ve been told you need a furnace motor replacement, it could be good news. Chances are, the existing motor in your furnace blower is an old-fashioned PSC (permanent split capacitor) type that was the industry standard for decades. These outmoded motors consume as much as 500 watts of electricity, adding significantly to your heating costs. Today, the improved option for furnace motor replacement is an ECM (electronically commutated motor) unit. Smarter technology incorporated in these motors draws only about 80 watts of electricity. That means a big load is taken off your monthly utility bill.

Lower operating costs are not the only reason choose an ECM upgrade, however. Here’s the other good news:

  • Old-school PSC motors operate in only two modes: on and off. When the unit cycles on, it delivers 100 percent air output. When it turns off, all air circulation ceases entirely. This on/off operation causes indoor temperatures to yo-yo as the system alternates between full blast heat and zero heat. An ECM motor is programmed to operate across a range of variable speeds, according to household heating requirements. When the motor cycles on, it delivers gentle, low-volume air output that gradually increases to bring the temperature in living spaces up to the thermostat setting without the abrupt “blast furnace” effect of a PSC motor. Once the temperature matches the thermostat setting, ECM technology ramps the blower speed down to a lower, continuous output that maintains indoor temperatures to a much higher accuracy without noticeable temperature swings.
  • Noise is reduced as changes in the volume of circulating air are made gradually, without the sudden sound of rumbling, rushing air through the ducts.
  • Unlike an on/off PSC motor, an ECM motor runs more or less continuously, circulating air through the system air filter at all times. Indoor air quality improves because air filtration never stops. In cooling mode, an air conditioner also does a better job of removing humidity from the air when air circulation through the evaporator coil is continuous versus on-and-off.
