As the weather gets warmer, many homeowners have already switched on their A/C and started to enjoy the cool air it provides. Some homeowners are also starting to ask about summer maintenance. One frequent question we get is whether to change air filters more frequently in the summer.
While there isn't one answer that fits every situation, there are some guidelines to help you decide how often to change your filter. The purpose of an air filter is to catch the pollutants and allergens in the air and filter them out. You want this to happen for two reasons:
Because your HVAC system sends more air through the filter, it gets dirtier faster. That means it's doing its job, but it also means that your system has to work harder to get the air it needs. Replacing your filter as it gets dirty lets your system do less work. This is both easier on the machinery and on your energy bills. So how often should you be changing your filter? During the summer months, you should check it at least once a month and change it when it's dirty or at least every three months.
