When you're getting ready to change your thermostat setting to cool for the summer months, you may notice an option you haven't given much thought to before: the "on" and "auto" fan setting.
This thermostat setting lets you control whether your A/C's fan runs all the time or just when the system is actively cooling the air. Since there are advantages to both settings, some homeowners aren't sure which one to choose.
Why You Might Want to Set Your Fan to "On"
The "on" setting keeps the fan running at all times. This means air is constantly being pulled through the filtration system and then being redistributed throughout the house.
The more often air is pulled through your air filter or UV air filtration system, the more dust, allergens, and other
pollutants are removed. This results in cleaner air. If you have family members who are prone to allergies or have breathing problems, this can be a huge advantage.
The constantly moving air has another advantage. It keeps the temperatures throughout your house fairly even. Not only do you want this for comfort, but it also helps reduce moisture accumulation from the temperature going up and down multiple times throughout the day.
Finally, a constantly moving machine tends to get less worn down than one that has to start and stop frequently. Your fan will probably last longer when you keep your thermostat setting on "on."
Why You Might Want to Set Your Fan to "Auto"
The "auto" setting only keeps the fan going when needed, which is typically during the time the A/C is actually cooling the house.
Because the fan is off part of the day, it
uses less electricity. This can lower your energy bill every month. You can also save money on your
air filters. When they're not being used 24 hours a day because air is constantly being pulled through them, they accumulate less dirt and need to be changed less often.
