Don't Ignore Attic SafetyMost homeowners don't jump for joy when they have to go work in their attic. In fact, their goal is usually to get in and out as fast as possible. While this goal is understandable, it's important that you don't ignore attic safety in the interest of speed. To make sure your attic work is as quick and painless as possible, start by planning ahead. Heat is a very real danger in attics during warmer months. Plan to start your work as early as possible to avoid the heat of the day. Make sure you take breaks if you need to cool off, and stay hydrated. Another consideration for attic safety is the air you'll be breathing. Inhaling insulation can be hard on your body. Many attics also have layers of old dust and other allergens. Making sure you have a breathing mask or respirator handy before you start your job can make the job much easier on your lungs. Make sure you have a safe way to access the attic if you don't have a built-in ladder. Step ladders are usually safe as long as you have a flat surface to rest them on. Even so, minimize the number of trips up and down the ladder by collecting your tools and supplies ahead of time. Use a rope and pail or other means of carrying the tools up that keeps your hands free for climbing. One of the biggest concerns for attic safety once you're up in the attic is footing. In most attics, you have to walk across joists. A wrong step could send your leg through the ceiling! To avoid this danger, make sure you have a flashlight or other lighting. You may also find it helpful to lay down boards to walk on over the joists. A little bit of planning can save a lot of time and trouble when it comes to being safe in your attic.
