The humid subtropical weather patterns of our coastal region can be turbulent, with severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in the spring and early summer, as well as hurricanes, which might occur anywhere from June through November. Severe weather can cause damage to homes from wind, hail and flooding. That's why homeowners in our region need to understand the importance of spring storm preparation.
Securing Your Home Southeastern Virginia homeowners should make their storm plans well in advance of any storm event. In the case of a tornado warning, move to the basement. If you don't have a basement, identify the structurally strongest space in the house, such as an interior bathroom or closet. Make sure you've cleared out the space in advance so that you and your family have room to hunker down there. Take enough mattresses or cushions to protect everyone's head from falling debris. If a hurricane is headed your way, it's probably best to evacuate. Be packed and ready to go with your most essential valuables to take inland or to a shelter when the evacuation notice is given. And don't wait till the last minute to secure your home. Close shutters or board up windows, closing and locking all windows beforehand. Move important possessions up high, to avoid storm surge. Secure container plants, outdoor furniture and tools in a garage. The fewer things flying around when the storm hits, the better. And long before the hurricane warnings are issued, take a good look at where your outdoor HVAC unit is located. Is it vulnerable to flooding or storm surge? If it is, perhaps you should have it moved to higher ground. Riding Out the Storm If you plan to ride out storms in your home, it's a good idea to invest in a generator in case the power is out for extended periods. Also, be sure you have plenty of water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, a weather radio, flashlights and plenty of batteries.
