How to Conserve Water this SpringA clean and abundant water supply is something that many of us take for granted. Taking steps to conserve water help assure that water stays readily available and affordable. Using less also cuts your water bills.

Outdoors Water use outdoors in the spring and summer often exceeds that used inside the home. Lower it by:

  • Using a leaf blower or broom to clean the patio, sidewalks and driveway instead of the hose.
  • Taking your vehicles to a car wash that recycles and reuses the waste water.
  • Installing a soil moisture sensor that's compatible with your irrigation system. These sensors keep the controller from turning on if they sense enough water in the soil at the root zone.

Around the House

  • Fix dripping faucets promptly. Besides wasting water, they may also stain plumbing fixtures and increase water heating costs.
  • Check the toilets for leakage. Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank and check later to see if the water in the bowl has changed colors. If so, clean or install a new flapper.
  • Select the load size accurately when doing small amounts of laundry.
  • Replace aging plumbing fixtures with WaterSense-labeled devices. WaterSense is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's latest program that makes it easy to locate the most water-conserving faucets, shower heads and toilets. If you don't need to replace them, look for WaterSense aerators for faucets and showerheads. They're inexpensive, easy to replace and are an effortless way to conserve water.

In the Kitchen

  • Use the microwave or refrigerator to thaw food instead of running water over it.
  • Run the dishwasher only when it's full. If you're due for a new one, look for one that carries the Energy Star Most Efficient label. If you like to run smaller loads more frequently, choose one with a setting for load size.
  • Soak dishes, pots and pans instead of running water over them.
