Keep HVAC System Components Protected from ThievesThe unfortunate truth is that an HVAC system can present a tempting, and often very easy, target for thieves and vandals. HVAC systems contain valuable metals, particularly copper, and it is common for copper pipes and even entire HVAC units to be stolen. Here are some tips you can use to protect your heating and cooling equipment and make it harder for thieves to do their dirty work.
  • Install lights. Put up lights around the HVAC unit, or add some additional lighting to your existing system. Make sure these lights are dedicated to shining on the HVAC equipment. Install timers or sensors that ensure the lights come on when it gets dark outside. Alternatively, install motion detectors that will cause the lights to come on if anyone gets close to the equipment. Motion detectors may be more effective at deterring thieves because of the startling effect of a sudden flood of light.
  • Put up a fence. Install a strong chain or metal-bar fence around the outdoor unit of your HVAC system. This fence should be enclosed on all sides, including the top, and should not leave enough space for anyone to slip through. Doors should be secured with heavy-duty padlocks. Consider further securing the doors with chains; metal chains will make noise if someone tries to remove them. If a fence is impractical, purchase a HVAC cage that encloses the outdoor unit. Bolt the unit to the concrete base for extra security.
  • Paint the pipes. Use spray paint or another type of tough paint to color the copper pipes and tubes inside the unit. The harder the paint is to remove the better. Many salvage yards won't accept copper tubing that has paint on it since that may indicate that the copper has been stolen.
