While it would be nice if every HVAC salesperson offered only straightforward, honest information and helpful guidance, not all do. Some salespeople feel the need to pressure their clients, but these tactics are fairly easy to avoid.
Stay on Topic
When you approach a salesperson about a particular service or piece of equipment, don't let them pull you off track by bringing up additional products. For instance, you might be looking to
upgrade your air conditioner, but the salesperson repeatedly tries to convince you that you need an in-duct air cleaner to go with it. Explain that you'll come back to that topic if you have any questions, and steer the conversation back to the topic you came to discuss.
Stick to the facts and figures of your purchase and don't let yourself be lulled into a chat about your kids, hobbies, or other personal topics. Some salespeople use this tactic to stir your emotions and get you to buy on impulse.
Take Things Slow
Before you commit to buy a product or service, take the time to do your own research on it. Especially with air cleaners,
duct cleaning, and certain other products, you may discover the salesperson exaggerated the potential benefits.
Never accept a verbal offer. Get all price offers, guarantees, and related information in writing. Read all contracts and other documents thoroughly before you sign them. Take them somewhere you can review them without feeling pushed to hurry.
Don't be swayed by limited-time incentives. These can be nice perks, but they're rarely beneficial enough to outweigh other factors that influence your buying decision.
If you run into a particularly persistent
HVAC salesperson, a polite yet firm explanation can often stop their sales pitch. Explain that you need time to think about the purchase, that you want to talk things over with your partner, or that you're only curious about the product and collecting information.
