Programmable thermostats are now the standard for newer homes, and many who own older homes are upgrading to these models. However, many homeowners treat them like older models and don't know how to use programmable thermostat settings properly. Consequently, they aren't able to gain the full benefits of optimal comfort and savings. Here are some tips to help you make this technology work for you.
Initial Programming of Your Thermostat A programmable thermostat will come with four main pre-programmed settings that are supposed to work for the typical American family. Your family's routine is likely different than your next door neighbor's, so know that you can adjust these settings to be in sync with your family's day-to-day life. Following are some tips for additional programming options. Seasonal Settings In winter months, set the temperature to 68 degrees when you’re awake and at home. Lower it by 10 to 15 degrees when sleeping or away. In Summer months, set the temperature to 78 degrees when you're home. Make sure to program the A/C to turn off anytime you won't be home. Set Temperatures in Advance Your programmable thermostat allows you to set the temperature in advance, in much the same way you would set your alarm clock. Use Hold Features Properly Units typically come with two main hold features, a hold/permanent/vacation and a temporary hold. Avoid using these settings to manage temperatures day to day, as you'll waste energy and pay more on utility bills. Use these settings when you're planning to be away for a longer period and need a consistent temperature.
