Excited to finally begin construction on that awe-inspiring addition to your Virginia home? If you haven't given any thought as to how you will handle the heating and cooling of this new space, you've only done half the work. Now is the time to start thinking ahead and make the appropriate plans. The trifecta of choices When deciding how to set up the heating and cooling of your home, you're going to have three choices:
  1. Extension. If your home's HVAC system is able to handle the additional load, and hasn't worn out from age, extending your current setup might be your best bet. Keep in mind that you'll need to extend your ductwork and make sure that it's well insulated and not full of cracks and gaps.
  2. Upgrade. This is typically needed when your system is too old -- let's say a decade or more -- or doesn't have the power that would be required to handle the heating and cooling needs of your current living area and the new addition.
  3. Independent system. The beauty of this choice -- which can be a requirement if the new area isn't close enough to your ductwork's primary trunk -- is that you can have the choice between a hydronic, mini duct or ductless system.
An energy evaluation is indispensable  Before you make your choice, consider having an HVAC technician perform an energy evaluation of your home. A proper audit will provide you with an overview of your home's energy performance and that of your current equipment setup. From there, the technician can give you an idea of ways to help improve your home's efficiency, in addition to the choice that would be best for your home and family.
