Boost Home Performance With 3 Tips For Energy SavingsAs winter turns the weather cold in the Hampton Roads area, many homeowners are looking for ways to achieve energy savings. High-efficiency HVAC equipment helps quite a bit, but you can gain even more savings by making changes to your home and how you use your HVAC equipment.

  1. Seal it up. Air leaks cause a significant amount of energy loss every year. In fact, your home's energy efficiency can be reduced by as much as 20 percent if you have unsealed air leaks throughout your home. It's not just doors and windows, either. As your ductwork carries conditioned air throughout your home, it can develop leaks. The energy used to heat or cool air that escapes through leaks in your ducts or through cracks or holes in your house is basically wasted. Luckily, this is an easy fix. Weatherstripping and caulk will seal most leaks in your home. For your ducts, use mastic to seal small leaks or contact a professional to seal up larger or more difficult problems.
  2. Insulate. Not only does the energy to heat and cool your home get wasted through air leaks, but it also gets wasted when heat radiates out of your home in the winter or into your home in the summer. Insulation can stop this process, keeping the heat and your energy dollars where they belong. Again, don't forget the ducts. Insulating your ductwork prevents a significant amount of energy loss.
  3. Turn it down. By lowering the temperature on your thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees for an eight hour period each day, you can shave as much as 10 percent off your energy bill. Make the change when everyone's gone from the house for several hours or at night when you can use blankets to keep warm, and you'll never notice the difference. Do you forget to set your thermostat lower? A programmable thermostat makes it easy to have different set temperatures for different times of the day.
