6 Things You Should Know About ThemAlthough many homeowners use traditional methods to boost indoor air quality, some have discovered that UV (ultraviolet) lights provide an excellent alternative to help provide crisp, clean air in their southeast Virginia homes. Ultraviolet lights are harmful to humans, and can even lead to cancer if exposure is significant. However, when you install them into your home's HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system, your health actually might improve. Because your exposure is minimal to none, you won't be affected by their powerful rays. However, microorganisms within your air will be. UV lights literally destroy these contaminants, including spores, mold, viruses and bacteria, to name a few. That's why hospitals and hardware-manufacturing facilities use them. It is important that you understand how UV lights work in your home to determine if they will helpful in your specific situation. Here are six things that you should know about them:
  • The way they work: Ultraviolet lights work by invading cells and breaking down their molecular bond.  It alters the microbe by making it unable to reproduce. Hence, the pollutant's eventual destruction.
  • Their benefits: By greatly reducing the amount of pollutants in your air, you will see a benefit to your indoor air quality. The overall health of you and your loved ones, especially those who suffer from asthma or allergies, likely will improve greatly.
  • They are important indoors: Most of us spend a large majority of our time indoors.  However, due to the enclosed aspect, dangerous pollutants reproduce like crazy. UV lights go a long way to providing us with needed protection.
  • The maintenance they require is minimal: A typical UV bulb will last one year. Any longer than that and the bulb will experience a reduction in its effectiveness.  After six months, however, be sure to wipe off any accumulated dust, which can decrease its effectively.
  • They don't use much electricity: Each UV light is equivalent to a standard 40-watt bulb.
  • You don't need many: As a general rule, an HVAC system will probably only need one ultraviolet light. However, this can depend on the size of the area that your HVAC system must cover.
