A Geothermal Heat Pump Is Eligible For A Tax CreditOne way to save money while upgrading your home's energy efficiency is to take advantage of tax credits like the one available for homeowners who install a geothermal heat pump. If it's time for a new HVAC system in your home, a geothermal heat pump not only improves your home's energy efficiency, but it may also qualify for a 30 percent tax credit. This can help offset the cost of the heat pump, making it even easier to recoup your investment. Geothermal heat pumps take advantage of the earth's naturally stable temperatures to both heat and cool your home. Heat naturally radiates from a hot area into a cooler area. In the summer, a geothermal heat pump pulls heat from your home and runs it through underground or underwater pipes, allowing the heat to radiate out into the cooler ground. In the winter, the heat pump pulls heat from the ground and uses it to warm up your house. By using nature's own heat energy, a geothermal heat pump can provide a very efficient means of heating and cooling your home. Although a geothermal heat pump is a significant investment, the savings on your energy bills help you get a quick return on your investment. If you take advantage of the available tax credit, you can recoup your money even faster. You can get 30 percent of the costs of the geothermal heat pump, as well as labor and installation costs, as a credit that will be applied to the taxes you owe. This amount can be held over until the next year if it's not all used during the first year. In order to qualify for the tax credit, your geothermal heat pump must have the Energy Star label. It must use the ground or ground water as an energy source for a primary or vacation home; it cannot be used solely for heating pools or hot tubs.
