Learn These HVAC Terms Before UpgradingBuying new HVAC equipment for your Hampton Roads-area home can be a huge investment, but knowing some HVAC terms can help you make the best buying decision. Not only are you investing your money, but you're expecting to live with the equipment that you buy for many years. For the best possible return on your investment, become familiar with these HVAC terms before you go shopping for a new air conditioner.
  • Refrigerant: This is the liquid that converts to a gas as it makes its way through the air conditioning system. At various points it either absorbs, transports or releases heat. It's responsible for the coolness in the air the A/C puts out. In the past, R-22 refrigerant, commonly known by the brand name Freon, was the most common refrigerant. However, due to its ozone-depleting qualities, R-22 has been replaced in the U.S. by R-410A. Check to see what type of refrigerant your potential new A/C uses, as the only source of R-22 available is reclaimed.
  • Evaporator: This coil absorbs heat and causes the refrigerant to boil, turning it into a gas.
  • Compressor: By forcing the molecules of the refrigerant together, the compressor causes a rise in temperature and pressure in the refrigerant and circulates it through the system.
  • Condenser: This coil contains refrigerant gas, which puts off heat as it moves through the coil and converts back to a liquid.
  • Cooling capacity: This reflects the amount of heat in a room that the A/C can remove over the course of one hour.
  • Cooling load: Used to calculate the cooling capacity needed, the cooling load indicates the amount of heat that builds up when a space doesn't have a cooling system.
  • Heat gain: The heat gain reflects the amount of heat generated by all sources, such as appliances and the sun. Added together, this amount indicates the cooling load.
  • EER and SEER: These terms stand for energy efficiency ratio and seasonal energy efficiency ratio, both measures of how efficiently an A/C runs.
