If you’ve experienced even just one bout of extreme weather or electricity blackout that has left your home without power, you know the inconvenience of these conditions. And it may be time to consider installing a standby generator in your home. With an available power source at your disposal, no matter what might cause your area or home to be without power, you’ll be ensured continuous and reliable access to electricity.

As a homeowner, you have some options when it comes to selecting the right standby generator for your home and your budget.

  • Whole-house generators will provide power to your entire circuit breaker panel and allow you to run several home systems at the same time. These types of generators can often power up to 48 kilowatts, more than any other system available.
  • Smart circuit generators can provide you with the convenience of a whole-house generator, but at a lesser cost. Smart systems rotate where the electricity supply goes, so even if your home is without power, you can still keep your air conditioning going, and when it cycles off, power will rotate to another system that needs to be powered up.
  • Essential circuit generators are at the low end of the cost scale, providing limited power to your home’s circuits, which is generally between 8 and 16 circuits. And depending on the wattage power of the system you select, it may be able to run an A/C, but can definitely handle other home equipment, like your dishwasher or lighting.

A few more points to consider when buying and installing a standby generator:

  • A gas model can connect directly to your home’s main supply line.
  • A certified electrician should install the generator and safely connect the generator itself, the transfer switch and the modules.
  • A qualified professional should also connect the system to the gas line, making sure that pressure and fit are optimized and that the system is safe to operate.
