If you're looking to replace your heating system, there are many options you can choose from. They can range from piping hot water below your floor to blowing heated air through ducts. What's the best option for your home?

Here are the most popular home heating systems, along with some of their advantages and disadvantages.

Forced Air

A forced air system consists of a furnace that heats air using electricity, natural gas, propane, or oil. It distributes the heated air through your ductwork and into your rooms through registers. Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Air can be filtered, humidified and dehumidified
  • Heats fast and evenly

Cons

  • Heated air can distribute allergens throughout your home
  • Can be fairly loud
  • Many don't operate efficiently

Boilers

These special-purpose water heaters distribute hot water or generate steam heat to warm your home. Boilers can use electricity, oil, natural gas, or propane as fuel sources. Pros

Cons

  • Unevenly distribute heat
  • Baseboard vents have to remain unobstructed, posing challenges for placement of furniture

Radiant-Heat Flooring

This system consists of pipes that circulate warm water under your floor. The floor gains heat that rises and warms the people using the room. Pros

  • Highly controllable
  • Heats evenly
  • It doesn't use ducts, so it doesn't distribute dust and allergens to your home
  • It's versatile and can be paired with other heating systems such as solar and geothermal

Cons

  • Expensive to install
  • It may not be applicable in your home, depending on your foundation and flooring.

Electric Resistance Heaters

These heaters can convert all the incoming electric energy into heat. Pros

  • Low installation cost
  • Energy efficient

Cons

  • Operating costs are high
