When you hire HVAC specialists for your installation, repair, or service project, you naturally expect them to be competent to do the job. HVAC certifications provide a reliable measure of a technician's level of training and depth of knowledge in heating and air conditioning work. Here are some of the more common and useful certifications in the HVAC industry.
HVAC professionals must be licensed by their state and often by their city or municipality. Licensing indicates that they are qualified to work on HVAC systems and have met the state or local standards governing HVAC services.
Certification in this standard is granted by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), one of the most important professional and technical organizations in the HVAC industry. Certification can be gained in residential HVAC design or light commercial HVAC design. Certification covers additional areas such as duct design and load calculations that determine how much heating or cooling a building needs.
NATE is a prestigious and respected testing and certification agency serving HVAC technicians in the United States. NATE, which stands for North American Technician Excellence, has been in existence for nearly 20 years and has certified thousands of technicians in heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and refrigeration. NATE certification is recognized throughout the HVAC industry in the United States. Certification requires passing a test of standard HVAC knowledge as well as a specialized test in areas such as air conditioning, gas or oil heating, geothermal systems, or HVAC system efficiency.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grants this certification to HVAC professionals who frequently work with HVAC system refrigerants, such as R-22 or R-410. Some of these refrigerants present environmental hazards and must be handled properly and safely. Only those who hold this certification can legally purchase, use, or dispose of refrigerants, including Freon.
