With the National Hurricane Center calling for a "normal" hurricane season in 2016, it's anyone's guess what's in store for southeastern Virginia. These days we're seeing more named storms emerging for a longer period than in past decades, meaning it's increasingly likely that damaging storms may occur not only from June 1 to Nov. 30, but beyond.
Whenever the storm comes, it's important not to let your guard down. Take action now, while there's a lull, and be ready when and if stormy weather appears.
Throughout hurricane season, it's wise to keep emergency supplies on hand. A typical survival stash should include the following:
It's never a bad idea in hurricane country to own a generator, either portable or standby. Power can be down for many days after a big storm.
Be ready to batten down the hatches if a storm approaches by protecting windows with plywood boards (use screw to affix, not nails) and securing planters, garden furniture, and anything that might become a flying missile.
Think about protecting your A/C's compressor, too. Is it in a low-lying area where it might be swamped by drenching rains? Consider moving it to higher ground or raising its concrete base. You can secure the compressor by tightly bolting it to the base and tying it down with hurricane straps. Protect it from flying debris by securing it with a strong tarp.
When the storm approaches, turn off the air conditioner to protect it from power surges. If you suspect it's been flooded, don't turn it back on until you have it inspected.
