Skylights are beautiful and bring natural light into your home, but they could actually cost you in home efficiency. They can permit air leaks, moisture issues and unwanted heat gain if they’re not carefully selected, installed and maintained.

What to Look for in a New Skylight

There is a massive variety of skylights available on the market — you can get units of all different sizes, shapes and materials for a wide range of applications and budgets. A few of the main considerations when buying include:

  • Shape — Skylights are available in shapes that range from round to pyramid. The ideal shape depends on the location – for example, a pyramid will generally let more light in, but it may also lead to more unwanted heat gain if it’s in a poor location.
  • Materials — Skylight selection hinges strongly on framing and glazing materials. Cheap, durable glazing is often made from plastic, but tempered glass or other such glazing can cut down on UV in the house more while offering longer-lasting clarity.
  • Efficiency rating — Ideally, go for the skylight with the Energy Star label. Energy Star products are at the top of their industry for efficiency, and may offset their own purchase price in energy savings throughout their useful lives.
  • Function — Skylights aren’t simply windows. They can be fixed panes or have the ability to open and close, they can have light tubes to improve daytime indoor lighting, and can even have solar trackers to maximize light throughout the day.

Installation Considerations

Unfortunately, you can’t just plug any skylight into any space and end up with good results. It’s important to pick the location carefully to improve heat gain during winter months, but minimize it during the summer. Flat styles should be installed on a raised curb and properly sealed.
