Your cooling system needs to be kept in good working condition for you to enjoy a comfortable home throughout the hot, humid summer. Key factors in its performance are the two coils of copper tubing where heat transfer occurs.Learning how they function can help you understand why having clean A/C coils is essential.

  • Evaporator coil — The evaporator coil is situated next to the blower fan in the air handler unit. The fan pushes warm air across the coil where a flow of cold, liquid refrigerant converts into a gas and draws out heat from the air in the process.
  • Condenser coil — The condenser is situated in the outdoor unit next to the compressor. Hot gaseous refrigerant travels through the coil, where it transforms back into a liquid and expels the heat it captured indoors.

Dirty A/C Coils Can Have Serious Consequences

A buildup of dust and dirt on the coils acts as an insulator that interferes with heat transfer and makes the cooling process less efficient. Dirty coils impact an A/C's performance in other ways as well:

  • With a loss of efficiency, your energy consumption and operating costs increase.
  • Airflow restrictions caused by dirt on the coils can make it difficult for the A/C to dehumidify your home properly.
  • Dirty coils make the system's internal pressure and temperature rise, which reduces its cooling capacity. Eventually, it can also cause a costly compressor breakdown or failure.

To help prevent problems related to dirty coils, you can take these steps:

  • Schedule yearly professional maintenance that includes cleaning the coils. A pro is familiar with the latest industry best practices and has the right equipment and cleaning products to do the job properly.
  • To keep debris off of the condenser coil, inspect the air filter every month and replace it whenever there's any visible accumulation.
  • Give the outdoor coil a gentle rinse with the garden hose once a month to wash off dirt and dust.
