Though some people like to say that size doesn't matter, when it comes to your new HVAC system, the opposite holds true. Having your climate-control systems properly sized with Manual J load calculations is a crucial part of installation. In order to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness, you must insist that that your HVAC contractor is familiar with Manual J.
What is Manual J? In short, Manual J is a calculation tool that was developed by HVAC experts in order to accurately size heating and cooling systems for individual homes. These calculations allow your contractor to determine the exact amount of heat and moisture will need to be removed from your house on the hottest day of the summer, and how much heat will be required to warm your home on the coldest day of the winter. Load calculations are based upon a number of factors, including:
Why is Manual J necessary? You may be wondering why you can't simply pick the largest system and install it in your home. After all, bigger is better, right? In the case of your HVAC equipment however, this is not the case. Though HVAC systems that are too small for your space will not keep your home comfortable, a system that is too large will come with its own set of problems. Over-sized air conditioners are prone to cycling on and off frequently. This action can create problems with excess moisture due to the fact that an air conditioner running on short cycles will not be able to properly dehumidify your home. In addition to clammy conditions, your indoor air quality will decrease when excess moisture creates the potential for mold and mildew growth. On top of all of this, heating and cooling systems that are too big will eat a hole through your wallet by requiring excess energy to run.
