Going on a summer vacation shouldn’t mean coming home to high energy bills or some other home safety issue. To ensure that you save energy on summer vacation, and to keep your home and its contents safe, implement the following tips:

  • Find the best setting for your home. When you’re away, there’s no need to run the air conditioner at top speeds. But you also don’t want to shut the system down completely, as high heat and humidity can cause damage to your home, leading to peeling paint and mold problems. Find a suitable middle ground before you head off on vacation.
  • Use a programmable thermostat. With this device, you can set a higher temperature for cooler nights and a lower temperature for hotter daytime conditions while still saving energy.
  • Pay attention to your water heater. After the costs to heat and cool your home, water heating comes in second as the largest consumer of home energy. Before you leave, turn your water heater's setting down to a temperature below 120 degrees. If you’ll be gone for a long period of time, you can also shut it down.
  • Limit heat gain. The amount of heat that can enter your home will raise the cooling load and cause your A/C to cycle on and consume more energy. You can reduce heat gain by closing drapes on the south and west sides of your home -- locations that are exposed to the hottest sun of the day.
  • Limit phantom energy. Even when your appliances and electronics are off, they will still consume small amounts energy as long as they're plugged in to the wall outlet or power strip. Before you leave for summer vacation, unplug appliances and electronics from their outlets.
  • Install a simple timer on a few lights. A timer that turns a light or two on for a couple hours each evening will make it look like someone is home while allowing you to reduce energy consumption by unplugging all the other lamps.
