When you’re buying a heat pump system, it's important that homeowners have a decent amount of HVAC IQ. Because heat pump efficiency involves both heating and cooling in a two-in-one system, your knowledge about its efficiency and function is doubly important.

There are four basic heat pump efficiency terms that every homeowner should consider before selecting a new system:

  • HSPF, or heating seasonal performance factor, is designed to show homeowners the measurement of a particular system’s ability to generate heat, compared to how much electricity that system must consume to do so. This is an efficiency calculation estimated over one heating season.
  • SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio, is much like HSPF, but it calculates cooling efficiency by comparing electricity consumed to cooling capacity produced over one cooling season.
  • COP, or coefficient of performance, is another measurement of heat pump efficiency. This rating determines efficiency at a specific temperature, whereas HSPF and SEER rate efficiency in general over one season. A system with a COP of 3, for example, would be able to transfer 3 watts of heat for every one watt of energy it consumes at the testing temperature. Residential heat pumps will generally have a COP between 2 and 5. So, in theory, a heat pump with a COP 5 could move 5 times the heat for every unit of energy it uses.
  • EER, or energy efficiency ratio, is a measurement that rates cooling efficiency at higher temperatures and higher humidity. For homeowners who live in warmer climates, selecting a high EER rating can be beneficial.

In general, the higher the heat pump efficiency rating, the higher your energy savings will be, and you’ll get a longer-lasting system with components that wear out less quickly. Heat pump efficiency will either make or break not only your energy savings, but your comfort too, as many of the features that increase efficiency ratings also impact how much comfort the system can generate.
