With winter behind us and an unseasonably hot spring upon us, you may not be too worried if your furnace gave out this past winter and needs to be replaced. After all, December’s a long way off, right? In reality, now is the time to start planning a replacement -- before the fall rush. So let’s review a few basics, because the right furnace replacement can save you a significant amount of money in the long run:
  • Some contractors like to sell units that are bigger than a homeowner needs (translation: more expensive than necessary). Yet contrary to what you might think, bigger is not always better. An oversized furnace will cycle on and off far more often than a properly sized furnace. This can increase wear and tear on your machine, causing premature system failure and another costly replacement.
  • What size furnace should you buy? An experienced HVAC technician can calculate how much heat your home needs by factoring in the size, construction quality and design of your home, as well as the cost of heating fuel. After the math is done, you’ll have the figures you need to find the perfect furnace.
  • In addition to a traditional furnace, an air-source heat pump is another excellent option.  This will give you what is known as a dual-fuel system.  The heat pump operates in the mild temperatures and the furnace in the more extreme temperatures.  With our mild winters, heat pumps will deliver warm & comfortable heat at a very high efficiency for about 80% of your heating needs.  Heat pumps also provide cost-effective cooling during the summer.
