Preventive Maintenance Tips
  • Change the filters: The efficiency of your air conditioner depends on you changing or cleaning the filters regularly. This is the first step in any preventive maintenance program. Some units have reusable filters while other requires a replacement screen. The U.S. Department of Energy states that changing the filters will improve the efficiency of the unit by between 5 to 15 percent.
  • Clean the area around the condenser: Rake and clear any debris from the outdoor equipment. Indoor units often build up grime on the elements. Wipe off any obvious signs of accumulation around the coils and outside of the unit.
  • Inspect the system: Inspect the unit for damage from the cold weather. Things to look for include bent coil fins, clogged drains and obvious signs of trauma. If you notice elements of the unit are missing or disconnected, call for service.
