One of the best ways to improve your home’s indoor air is to significantly reduce the amount of dust in your house. Unfortunately, there are many sources of dust, which makes reducing or eliminating household dust an especially difficult challenge.
For example, a significant component of dust is dead human skin cells. We shed these cells constantly, up to three pounds of them a year. Clothing, carpets and bedding release broken fibers and threads that become part of the dust in our home. Dust mites survive by eating our dead skin cells, which means excess dust gives these microscopic organisms an environment where they can thrive and reproduce. Worse, dust mites’ waste products enter our indoor air and aggravate allergies, asthma and respiratory problems. A dust-free home is a worthy goal, but unlikely without a clinical level of effort and expense. Alternatively, here are three major steps you can take to cut down the amount of dust in your home’s living spaces.
