Despite all their conveniences, attached garages also have a distinct disadvantage: they can compromise the quality of your home’s indoor air. Carbon monoxide, engine exhaust, paint fumes and other dangerous substances can leak into your home through gaps or holes in the wall between your house and garage. In some cases, pressure differences between the garage and your house can actively pull these substances inside your home. Use the following three precautions to reduce harmful fumes and improve the overall air quality in your indoor environment:
  • Reduce starting or running of fuel-based engines in the garage: Certainly you will have to start your car in your attached garage, but limit the amount of time the vehicle is allowed to sit and idle. If you have other fuel-powered vehicles or yard equipment, such as lawn mowers, snow blowers, trimmers, or chain saws, take them outside to start them and don’t let them run or idle inside the garage.
  • Eliminate storage of harmful substances: We often use our garages to store paint, solvents, garden chemicals, pesticides, and other harmful substances. If these items’ containers are not tightly sealed, they can leak fumes that can get into your house. Reduce the amount of this material kept in your garage, or eliminate it entirely. Restock when needed and buy only as much as you can use at one time.
  • Install a garage ventilation system: Adequate garage ventilation is the most important factor in resolving garage-related air quality problems. Install one or more garage fans, similar to fans used in bathrooms, to vent garage air to the outdoors. Run the fans frequently, especially after parking your car in the garage. These fans can also change pressure rates between your garage and home interior, preventing fumes from being pulled into your house.
