A certain amount of noise from your furnace is normal. There will be sounds from the blower as it moves air through the system, and small clicks, hums and rattles as burners click on and off and internal components go through their normal functions. However, if your furnace noise is more frequent, louder than usual or different than what you've heard before, it could be a sign of a serious safety or operational problem requiring the assistance of an HVAC professional.
Booms and pops: Booms, pops, or explosion sounds in a gas furnace can be sign of a critical safety issue that needs to be corrected immediately. These sounds could mean that volatile gas is accumulating and is exploding when the furnace burner ignites. If a large quantity of flammable material builds up inside your furnace, it could cause a devastating fire or large explosion. Clogged or dirty burners are frequent causes of gas buildup. Contact Russell's Heating & Cooling, your local HVAC contractor to get the problem fixed as soon as possible.
Rattling or banging: Loose or improperly secured doors, components or parts can cause rattling sounds in your heating system. If the access door hasn’t been closed tightly, it could tap against the furnace frame. Bolts or screws may need to be tightened, or a loose part may need to be refitted into place. Loose or undersized ductwork can also make rattling sounds and other noises.
Clicking: Frequent clicks may mean the flame sensor, the device that detects whether the furnace’s fuel has been ignited, is not working correctly. It may need to be cleaned or replaced.
Squealing and grinding: A squealing sound may mean the blower motor belt is slipping or that bearings, fans, or other moving parts need lubrication. A grinding sound may indicate the blower motor bearings are wearing out and the entire motor may soon need to be replaced.
