Furnace filters are easy to ignore. Tucked away in the garage or in a closet, they generally don't receive too much attention until they become clogged and start causing problems. But as winter tightens its grip and you find yourself using your furnace more and more, it would be wise not to neglect your furnace filters.
Why Are Furnace Filters Important? As you are probably aware, furnace filters clean the air that passes through your furnace. Filters trap dirt dust, mold, pollen, pet dander and countless other particles, removing them from the air you breathe. They also keep your furnace itself clean and running smoothly. Filters are available in many different types, of which disposable fiberglass filters are the least expensive. Electrostatic filters, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, Lennox PureAir, and Trane Clean Effects systems are an example of filtration systems that are more effective, but also more expensive. What Happens When Filters Get Clogged? Filters accumulate a buildup of particles over time, and can eventually get so clogged that air has a hard time getting through. This causes problems in two ways. First, it can cause your furnace to overheat, leading to a cycle of frequent starting and stopping. Second, it makes your furnace work harder than it has to, costing you more money than you need to spend on heating. How Often Should Filters Be Cleaned? Filters should be cleaned or changed as often as they get clogged, and this varies from one home to another. A good rule of thumb is to clean your filters -- or change them if you use a disposable type -- every month.
