An unexpected malfunction of your heating and cooling system is both costly and inconvenient. One of the best ways to maintain your heating and cooling system and keep it running at peak performance levels is to schedule an annual precision tuneup.

An HVAC professional performing a precision tuneup will typically clean the unit's evaporator coils using a special cleaner. If your system includes a heat pump, the HVAC professional will clean your unit's condenser coils with a special cleaner as well. During the tuneup, your HVAC professional will also flush your drain lines to remove debris.

Most precision tuneups will include testing of your capacitors, refrigerant levels, backup electrical heat and starting capabilities. It may also include inspection of the flue pipe, duct system, safeties, and the burners on the furnace. Finally, most HVAC professionals will measure the unit's electrical current and amp draw, check the electrical connections, and lubricate all moving parts. If the technician identifies problems during testing, he will offer advice for possible repairs.

Checking your furnace for problems each year allows you to identify malfunctions before they occur and schedule repairs in advance. Other aspects of the tuneup may even solve problems before they begin. For example, tightening all of your unit's electrical connections prevents them from becoming loose enough to harm your system or start a fire.
