Winter has arrived to the Hampton Roads area, and you may be wondering if this will be the year you need an emergency furnace replacement. While you can't know exactly when you'll need to replace your furnace, you can do a little research so that when that day comes, you can make a smart purchasing decision.

SIZE

Chances are, if your furnace is more than 15 years old, it's probably oversized for your house. Buying a furnace that is the proper size will make your furnace heat more efficiently. An HVAC professional from Russell's Heating & Cooling can help you determine the correct size.

EFFICIENCY

If your furnace is really old ( 30 plus years ), it's probably only about 50 to 60 percent efficient, meaning it's losing at least half of the heat generated up the chimney. A furnace that is rated "high efficiency" can be up to 97 percent efficient, losing very little heat.

COST

As you compare different types of furnaces, you'll see that high-efficiency furnaces also cost more initially. You can pay more up front for a high-efficiency furnace that will help you save year after year on energy costs, or pay less for the furnace, but pay more over time in fuel costs.

Before the time comes for an emergency furnace replacement, you can do some quick math to help you with that decision. If you take your fuel costs for the year and multiply that by 20 percent (the difference efficiency between your old furnace and new), that number is your annual savings in fuel costs. If you divide that number into the cost of your new furnace, that's roughly how long it will take to recoup your investment.

The average life span of a furnace is approximately 25 years; the closer your furnace is to that age, the more likely you'll be facing an emergency furnace replacement. You can make a good decision by doing a little research ahead of time.
