"Energy loss" in your home is a term that simply means conditioned air is escaping. This means your HVAC system has to work harder. Not only does a harder-working furnace cost you money in the form of increased energy bills, but it also shortens the lifespan of your unit.

To avoid these problems, try lowering your home's heating load and increasing furnace efficiency with these simple tips:

  • Consider scheduling a professional energy audit. Many HVAC companies and utility companies will offer such audits for free or at a low cost, and a professional can use special tools to identify air leaks in your home.
  • Look for air leaks on your own. This can be done simply using incense. Turn off your HVAC system and light a stick of incense, watching where air currents drift. This can help you quickly and easily spot gaps where air is escaping. Pay special attention to the areas around windows, under doors and near gaps where there are light switches and electrical outlets.
  • Replace old and leaky windows with newer and more energy-efficient models. The Department of Energy estimates that you can waste between 10 and 25 percent of your heating bill just on leaky windows alone. When considering replacing windows, remember that there may be tax credits available to help subsidize the cost.
  • Take care of your HVAC system. This means making sure that your ducts are not leaky, and insulating your furnace so it won't have to work as hard.
  • Consider a digital programmable thermostat so you can lower the temperature of your home when you aren't there.
