Furnace air filters should be changed every two to three months in order to trap the most amount of particles possible from your indoor air. Irritants such as dust, dirt, dander, pollen and mold spores can increase allergy and asthma symptoms.
If the internal pieces of your furnace become dirty, the entire system can become overworked when trying to bring your home to the set temperature. Dirty buildup can also cause your furnace to overheat, which can lead to high-priced repairs, replacement and decreased furnace efficiency.
When selecting a new filter for your furnace you should take into account a number of factors. Filters are rated according to the size of the particles that can be trapped. The most affordable filter on the market is made of fiberglass. However, it doesn't trap much and you have to replace it more often. Electrostatic filter work a little more efficiently and trap particles that 1.5 microns in size. This accounts for about 15 to 20 percent of the particles you will find in your home. Pleated filters are your best option, and they will trap about 35 to 50 percent of the irritants that cause your home and furnace problems.
Installing an air-purification unit as part of your furnace can help remove additional particles from the air and protect your furnace from coming into contact with a lot of dirt and debris. A number of different models are available, some utilizing filters while others have washable collection plates.
