Have you ever dreamed up a bold new plan for your landscape and then realized the air conditioner condenser is cramping your design style? There are ways to work around it and make it less obtrusive, while still ensuring that the unit sits in the landscape in a way that allows it to do its job unimpeded. For instance, say you're interested in xeriscaping your yard. Let's look at how your outdoor unit can work with your design scheme.
Xeriscaping The term xeriscaping comes from the root word "xeric," which means dry. It involves creating a landscape that uses minimal water. Even in our generally wet Eastern climate, we have times of drought, so it's a good idea to landscape with plants that can survive on scanty rain. Not only will you save a precious resource, you'll also save money on water bills. Eliminate Grass It's probably a radical idea in Virginia, but there are ways to get around those water-inhaling lawns that most people have. Ground covers, bunch grasses, yards full of perennials and other plantings free you from the lawnmower and lower your water use. What's more, you'll eliminate the hazard of grass clippings being propelled into the condenser and possibly clogging it. What to Plant Most nurseries provide lists of drought-tolerant plants, including trees, shrubs, perennials and ground covers. Do avoid planting species that shed fibrous seeds, which could clog your condenser. Follow these basic rules when you choose the plants near your condenser;
Planting and Design When planting, keep plants at least 2 feet away from the condenser to avoid impeding airflow. Also, if you create pathways or beds with gravel or stones, be aware you shouldn't weed whack near the condenser.
